What Is a Chiropractic Adjustment?
A chiropractic adjustment is a quick, controlled thrust applied to a joint that is restricted or not moving well. It is most commonly applied to the spine, but adjustments can also be performed on most other joints throughout the body including the shoulders, hips, knees, ankles, wrists, and elbows. The goal is to restore normal movement, reduce pain, and improve function.
How Do Chiropractic Adjustments Work?
During an adjustment, a specific force is applied to the joint in a particular direction. You will often hear a pop or crack. That sound is simply gas being released from the joint, similar to cracking your knuckles. It is not bones grinding or anything going back into place.
The effects go beyond just the joint itself. An adjustment can influence how the nervous system processes pain signals, which is why people often feel relief not just locally but more broadly after treatment.
For patients where a traditional adjustment may not be appropriate, such as those with osteoporosis or other conditions that require a gentler approach, joint mobilisation is another option. This involves slower, controlled movements applied to the joint without the thrust. It achieves a similar goal of improving movement and reducing pain, just through a lower-force technique.
What Conditions Do Chiropractic Adjustments Help With?
Chiropractic adjustments are commonly used for low back pain, neck pain, thoracic spine pain, and joint pain throughout the body. For chronic low back pain, it is one of the most widely used manual therapy interventions and performs well alongside other recommended treatment approaches. For neck pain, both cervical and thoracic adjustments can reduce pain and improve function.
The results tend to be strongest in the short term for pain and disability. For longer-term benefit, regular care combined with exercise and movement is the most effective approach.
Are Chiropractic Adjustments Safe?
Chiropractic adjustments have a strong safety profile. The most common side effects are mild and short-lived, things like temporary soreness, stiffness, or brief lightheadedness. These typically settle within a day or two. Serious adverse events are rare.

A thorough history and examination before treatment is important to identify anyone who may not be appropriate for certain techniques.
What Do Chiropractic Adjustments Feel Like?
Most people find adjustments more comfortable than they expect. You may feel some pressure as the chiropractor sets up, followed by a quick thrust and often an audible pop. Some people feel immediate relief, while for others it takes a few sessions to notice a change. Mild soreness afterwards is normal and usually settles quickly.
