What to Expect at Your First Chiropractic Appointment

By Dr Adam Filocamo  |  BodySync Chiropractic, Stirling WA  |  June 2026

Walking into a new healthcare appointment can feel a little daunting, especially if you have never seen a chiropractor before. Here is exactly what happens at BodySync Chiropractic so you can walk through the door knowing what to expect.

The History

Your first appointment is longer than follow-up visits, and most of it is spent talking. Your chiropractor will ask about your main complaint, when it started, what makes it better or worse, your work, training habits, lifestyle, and any relevant medical history. This part matters more than people expect. Research consistently shows that the quality of the patient-practitioner relationship, including how well you feel heard and understood, is one of the strongest drivers of a positive outcome.[1]

The Physical Examination

After the history comes a physical assessment. This typically includes observing how you move, identifying any relevant asymmetries or restrictions, and testing the joints, muscles, and nerves involved in your complaint. This applies whether you are coming in with a shoulder, hip, knee, or spinal complaint. The goal is to identify what structures are involved, understand the bigger picture, and rule out anything that needs further investigation or referral.

Report of Findings and Your Care Plan

Once the assessment is complete, your chiropractor will explain what they found and what they think is going on in plain, straightforward language. You will then be walked through your management options and what each one involves. Studies show that patients who receive clear explanations about their diagnosis and feel involved in their treatment decisions tend to report better outcomes and higher satisfaction.[1]

A consent discussion follows, where you have full say over what you are comfortable with. For example, neck adjustments and dry needling are the two things patients most commonly prefer to skip, and that is completely fine. There is more than one way to get a good result, and if something is not for you, your chiropractor will work around it. Treatment is always built around what you are comfortable with, not a one-size-fits-all approach.

Treatment and Rehabilitation

In most cases, some treatment will take place on the day. Depending on your assessment, this may include spinal and extremity adjustments, soft tissue therapy, dry needling, joint mobilisation, and more. Evidence shows that combining different treatment approaches produces better outcomes than relying on any single technique alone.[2] Your chiropractor will use whichever combination makes the most sense for your presentation on the day.

Before you leave, you will be shown targeted rehabilitation exercises specific to your condition and goals, and guided through how to perform them correctly. Building a consistent routine around these exercises is a core part of getting better and staying better long term.

You may feel some mild soreness for a day or two after your first treatment. This is a normal response and generally settles quickly.

What Comes Next

At the end of your visit, you will leave with a clear plan outlining how many sessions are recommended, what the goal is, and what you can do between appointments to support your recovery. If something outside chiropractic scope is identified, a referral or co-management with your GP will be recommended.
